Now, for those of you who are unfamiliar with Cuphead, I recommend reading out full review HERE, but I will offer a quick run-down as well! Cuphead is an old-school, unforgiving platformer that centres around zany boss battles, each with their own unique mechanics. The soundtrack is also perfectly in line with the whole aesthetic! The graphics are perfect for the imagery Studio MDHR was trying to achieve – it looks like a cartoon straight out of the 1930s golden age of animation and has the over-the-top, surreal enemies and encounters that you would expect to accompany such a game. Anyone can pick it up and learn the controls in a few short minutes, but each level and boss presents a new challenge that can take dozens of attempts to master. I will still let my opinion stand, however, as the simple nature of this game is a huge selling point. This may seem like an outlandish statement when compared to AAA blockbuster hits like Assassin’s Creed, Halo, Doom and many, many other franchises that have seen incredible success and, in all fairness, have done so on the backbone of some amazing games. There are so many subtle elements that meld together seamlessly to create what is, in my mind, one of the most enjoyable and addictive games to ever be released. It can be difficult to explain just how good Cuphead is as a game. If you have not yet found the time to experience Cuphead in all of its glory do not fret! Cuphead and it’s DLC, ‘The Delicious Last Course’, are available on the most mobile and versatile gaming console ever, the Nintendo Switch! It combines a classic platformer feel with a wacky and unique cartoon aesthetic, topped with very challenging and rewarding gameplay. It’s not the best way to play or experience the game.Cuphead has to be one of the most successful indie games to grace our presence in the past decade. By comparison those on the Xbox controller are stiff and sluggish, not quick or efficiently spaced well enough to maintain that key dynamic. This is much easier with the more compact size of the Joy-Cons, the slightly closer layout of the action buttons, how slim and flat the buttons are and how easily they respond to pressure. Only in Cuphead, the run button, crucially, shoots the gun, and keeping a constant line of fire and an itchy jumping finger at the ready is key to being good at the game. A game like Cuphead is best played, well, a lot like an early Mario game: keep the sprint button pressed down and use another part of the thumb to jump. At a casual glance, you wouldn’t think the difference in their design would make a substantial difference, but it made sense after a few hours of play and a bit of closer inspection. I didn’t even realize I had a problem with the Xbox One controller until playing on the Switch. That is, until you get the Joy-Cons in your hands and see how much better it is for the controls. The loading screens seem to be just a bit longer than on Xbox One, but other than that, you’d be hard pressed to find much of a difference between the two. As a side scrolling platformer, though, Cuphead is perfectly at home. Switch ports can be hit or miss depending upon the original format-I find Diablo III and Civilization 6 obscenely slow and clunky compared to the quick ease of using a mouse on PC. But to my surprise, a stronger reason emerged right away, edging out this one as the superior. Its release on the Switch has been highly anticipated, including by folks like myself who already own a copy, but, as it’s a straight port with no additional content or features, I didn’t expect my preference for the Switch version to go beyond my appreciation for the console’s portability. And this is especially true of this week’s release of Cuphead, the 1930s animation-inspired platformer that since its original debut a year and a half ago has been practically the only reason to own an Xbox One. Lately the company has had an impressive eye for quality, consistently snagging the most innovative and successful indie games on the market. The way Nintendo has been pursuing indie games on the Switch these days, it’s almost easy to forget that once upon a time, they were considered averse to third party titles.
